TROUBLESHOOTING TIPS

Working With Schoology Assignments

Working with OneNote

Cannot connect to Zoom session

Some students and families have reported that when trying to connect to Zoom, a  status dialog "Connecting" appears and does not go away.

Zoom Connecting Error

Others have reported the following error message:

Can't connect o Zoom error message

Clearing the Browser Cache (Chrome / Microsoft Edge) will resolve these issues.  Of course, it's always good practice to restart the laptop when having issues.

Cannot connect to home wireless network

Sometimes a laptop will not connect to a home network while other devices can connect.  We recommend resetting the network router following these steps:

  1. Power down the laptop (shutdown).

  2. Unplug the power for your modem.

  3. Unplug the power to the router

  4. Leave them both off for 1 to 2 minutes.

  5. Plug the modem back in and let it boot up.(Probably 45 to 60 seconds)

  6. Plug the router in and wait the same amount of time.

  7. Power on the laptop.

  8. Re-connect the laptop to the network.

ZOOM Update

Zoom has released Version 5.0 that includes advanced security enhancements with support for AES 256-bit GCM encryption. With the new update, you will also see a difference in the options for inviting attendees and for ending/leaving a meeting.

Zoom Version 5.0 (or later) will be required for all Zoom sessions after May 30,2020. As such, everyone will need to upgrade his/her version of Zoom by May 30th.

HF-L STUDENTS:

The device must be on the HF-L campus and connected to the District wireless network in order to receive this update.  Parents/Students will need to go to one of the school buildings and park near the building.  Please follow this process:

  • Shutdown the laptop before coming to campus.

  • Once on campus, turn on the laptop and connect to the HFL Wireless Network.

  • Wait for the Zoom update to occur in about 5 minutes.  When the update is complete, the Zoom app will open and the version will be displayed at the bottom of the Join window.  Please DO NOT start the Zoom app while the update is running.

If you have a personal device that you use with Zoom, you will need to update the Zoom App before May 30th.

HF-L STAFF:

If you are working on campus now, the zoom update has already been sent to your computer.   The new version is 5.0.1.  To check the version, open the Zoom app from the Windows Start menu:

If you are working remotely - below are 2 options on how to complete this update:

Option 1: From home, on your school issued laptop, connect to the HF-L Network via the VPN. Once you connect to the VPN, the software update will take place. It should occur in about 5 minutes. When the update is complete, the Zoom app will open and the version will be displayed at the bottom of the Join/SignIn window (see image below).  Please DO NOT start the Zoom app while the update is running.

If you are unfamiliar with the VPN, the instructions for installing the VPN can be found on the Staff Intranet. The VPN allows you to remotely connect to the HF-L Network. Please be sure to disconnect from the VPN after your software update has completed.

Option 2: Drive to one of the school buildings, park near the building, open your school issued laptop and be sure you are connected to the HF-L Wireless network. Once connected to the network, the software will install in about 5 minutes. When the update is complete, the Zoom app will open and the version will be displayed at the bottom of the Join/SignIn window (see image below).  Please DO NOT start the Zoom app while the update is running.

Clipboard History

Clipboard history allows you to paste previously copied items into any other item (document, email, etc.) saving you time from copying and pasting one item at a time.   This is a huge time saver when copying and pasting comments from one tool to another or when you need to paste a frequently used phrase or term.

To turn this feature on, select the WINDOWS + V key.    Then after copying multiple items, retrieve your copy history by again selecting WINDOWS + V. Simply select the copied item and it will paste right into your active document.    The clipboard history will save up to 25 clips and will be cleared when you restart your machine unless you pin the copied item.
